Elon Musk’s Boring Infrastructure Company and Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority said on Friday they had signed a preliminary agreement to launch the Dubai Loop, a 17-kilometre (11-mile) underground high-speed transportation network. Omar Al Olama, the UAE’s minister of state for artificial intelligence, announced the project in a video interview with Musk at the World Government Summit on Thursday, without providing further details.
The project would be similar to the Vegas Loop, which began transporting passengers in electric cars through tunnels in 2021. The Vegas Loop includes five stations around a convention center in the American city and aims to include more than 100 stations in total.
Musk first promoted his vision for a futuristic transportation system called Hyperloop more than a decade ago. Musk also owns electric carmaker Tesla and aerospace company SpaceX and was appointed by US President Donald Trump to run the newly created Ministry of Government Efficiency.
The Dubai government media office said via Musk’s X platform that the service will cover the most congested areas of Dubai.
The project aims to transport more than 20,000 passengers per hour initially, with an eventual capacity of more than 100,000 people per hour.
